- Premiere: The Schizophonics Live at Old Bar
We've dug through Bill's archive and made a list of the best of the best unreleased gig footage. Until we're back on Johnston Street we'll be uploading one of them every week. The Schizophonics' trip round the globe supporting their latest album 'People in the Sky' didn't go quite as anyone planned thanks to Covid-19, but that didn't stop the dynamic duo of Pat and Lety from putting on one hell of a show. Joining them on this trip round the sun was former bassist of Cavemen Takumi Yanai, who naturally compliments the bands chaotic energy with his perfect form and technique. Our footage of The Schizophonics will go live at 6pm Sunday AEST. The video link is available below.
- Playlists Vol.7
The past few weeks I've been listening to Ausmuteant's last album '...Presents the World in Handcuffs' on repeat. If you've never heard it or haven't listened in a while, I strongly suggest giving it a run through as it's more relevant than ever. It's on Spotify with a vinyl version still available on their Bandcamp out through Anti-Fade Records. We've been posting a few playlists that some of our mates have been listening to recently, it's been real cool discovering so much different stuff that i'm not used to listening to so hopefully you'll find something you like from these too. Ciarn Gallagher (Dumb Punts, Smooch) 10 songs I like I like em too! Mikel Salvador (Crocodylus) Film Music "Songs used in some of my favourite films." Wayland Harty (Flight to Dubai, Nick Nuisance & The Delinquents) Set it on fire We don't need no water Hayley Franklin (Forever Renter, Yeah Don’t Care, Common Cult) Women of Power "A gals to the front playlist of songs to make you feel pumped up and empowered!" Sam Mcpherson (Rathead) 4 Weeks “25 songs I’ve had on repeat for the last 4 weeks. I have no shame ✨” Matilda & Samantha Elliot (Tunes with the twins) Bumbling from the mountains to the city Tracks we will use or have used on the Blue Mountains Train line on our way to the city for a night out! And for the brave here's our megamix link with all of the above playlists. Put it on shuffle and hope for the best.
- Playlists Vol.6
Great to see a fair few venues getting the green light to at least partially re-open. We're on the home stretch now, hoping for more good news and less new cases in the coming weeks. We've been posting a few playlists that some of our mates have been listening to recently, it's been real cool discovering so much different stuff that i'm not used to listening to so hopefully you'll find something you like from these too. Grace Gibson (Future Suck) Revulva A collection of badass women singing badass songs Ace Chapman (Little Elizabeth, Charging Stallion) playmix "my last months morning coffee playlist" Kaitlin Rose (Kaitlin Keegan) iso dance parti "Pretty self explanatory haha" Arron Mawson (Stiff Richards, Legless Records) Doe St - #5 2.5 hrs of Soul, Rhythm & Blues songs that have been heavily sampled & remixed through generations of Hip Hop & popular music. Songs that would have been on our 2019 hottest 100 if I didn't have goldfish memory And for the brave here's our megamix link with all of the above playlists. Put it on shuffle and hope for the best.
- Premiere: Hideous Sun Demon Live at The Tote
We've dug through Bill's archive and made a list of the best of the best unreleased gig footage. Until we're back on Johnston Street we'll be uploading one of them every week. Much like the rest of us, Hideous Sun Demon had some pretty big plans for 2020 that got hit for six by you-know-flu. Their tour for latest single 'Gimmicks' would have just wrapped up it's Queensland leg this week. Luckily through the powers of movie-magic we are taking you back to the launch of their most recent EP Good Time at The Tote in July 2019. Supported by Eggy, & Immigrant Union & BIN, a Good Time was had by all. Our footage from Hideous Sun Demon's set will play at 6pm Friday AEST. The video link is available below as well as shared on our socials on the day.
- Premiere: Slim Jeffries Live at The Tote
We've dug through Bill's archive and made a list of the best of the best unreleased gig footage. Until we're back on Johnston Street we'll be uploading one of them every week. After a week of fondly reminiscing about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater it's about time we got this one up. Slim Jeffries' 'Loose Change' EP launch at The Tote was one hell of an undertaking. 17 bands across two stages from 4:30 all the way to 1am, have a look at this lineup. Our footage from Slim Jeffries' set will play at 6pm Friday AEST. The video links will be available below as well as on the Facebook Event.
- Premiere: Private Function 'St. Anger' & Clowns 'Bad Blood'
We've dug through Bill's archive and made a list of the best of the best unreleased gig footage. Until we're back on Johnston Street we'll be uploading one of them every week. This weekend it's double or nothing. Private Function's much anticipated debut album 'St. Anger' was one of our most anticipated releases last year and did not disappoint. Fans swarmed the sold out Tote Hotel for one of the bands biggest displays of equal parts insanity & depravity and were greeted with blunt force trauma to the head delivered by inflatable rafts. We were also front and center having recovered from the hot dog eating competition in the front bar (typing this out I can't believe it actually happened) and I recorded the entire set from the stage. Also last year was Clowns' great "Keepin the Dive Alive' which saw the Wacken & Download festival veterans return to their roots playing local bars featuring each of their albums in it's entirety. We were fortunate enough to be in attendance for the show at Last Chance Rock & Roll Bar where they played through their punk rock classic 'Bad Blood'. This album is easily one of their most critically acclaimed releases and the show was the first (of many) to sell out on this tour. With some of their biggest bangers like 'Euthanise Me' and 'Never Enough' as well as my personal favorite Clowns' song 'Swallow Your Dreams', everyone was completely ready for the wild show that ensued. Private Function's St. Anger will play at 6pm Friday AEST & Clowns' Bad Blood will be at 6pm Saturday. The video links are available below as well as on the Facebook Event. I don't have photos from these events as I was busy recording so please enjoy the below gallery of some of my favorites from many many different gigs seeing both of these bands.
- Johnston Street Hottest 100 2019
2 years ago Jack and I got particularly frustrated with how the annual Triple J hottest 100 barely includes any Australian artists for voting. We built a website and compiled a massive list of releases from all the local artists we could think of so we could show some appreciation for all the great music that's out there. Every January after the votes were tallied we put on a live show with some of our good mates and did our own countdown from the year before, the last one being one of my favorite shows ever. We may have been too lazy / crippled to do a hottest 100 this January but after looking back on all the tunes that came out last year we couldn't help ourselves but to at-least put together a playlist. This is the hottest 100 for 2019 as voted by Jack and Bill (democracy is disabled in 2020). As always there's going to be tracks that aren't included that we simply forgot about / missed when they came out so don't pitchfork us too hard for what is an entirely subjective list of releases. All of these songs are on Spotify (playlist link at the bottom) but please consider giving the entire releases & albums a listen and if you can purchase a copy of the physical / digital release on Bandcamp as well as all the stuff on alternative platforms like Soundcloud and Triple J Unearthed. We've seen almost all of these bands live and I enjoyed every single one so when the pub eventually re-opens please join us in coming to a show and thanking them for all the great tunes we get to enjoy. We've dug through Bill's archive and made a list of the best of the best unreleased gig footage. Until we're back on Johnston Street we'll be uploading one of them every week. Up next is one of the most cooked sets we've ever filmed at one of the best house parties we've ever been to, Zazapalooza in Spotswood. - Playlists Vol.5
If you didn't see yesterday Desert Highways put out a massive release on bandcamp of 200 donated songs, i've barely even got a quarter of the way through it and already heard some massive tracks. There's quite a few interesting bits and bobs from bands all over the globe so I highly recommend giving it a look through at the link below. Desert Highway's 'No Gigs Does Not Have To Mean No Music' We've been posting a few playlists that some of our mates have been listening to recently, it's been real cool discovering so much different stuff that i'm not used to listening to so hopefully you'll find something you like from these too. We're starting with our cherished memories of New York underground legends Hank Wood & The Hammerheads live at The Tote in 2018. Premiering tonight at 6pm AEST.
